Orchestral Excerpts

The Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival will no longer conduct auditions for placing in either the Festival Symphony Orchestra or the Festival Concert Orchestra on the first day of the Festival. Participants (excluding pianists) will need to send a recorded audition to us. Please download the relevant sheet music from the list below.

Audition excerpts will be downloadable from 1 April.

Recorded auditions must reach us no later than 14 June 2024

What needs to be on your audition video?
You need to record around 5 minutes of a solo piece. This can be any piece (or part thereof) that you are currently studying or have performed in the past. If the piece ordinarily requires piano (or orchestral) accompaniment, this can be omitted for the purposes of your audition video i.e. we just need to see, and hear you by yourself. If you have a recording with piano this is fine too. In addition you need to record the audition excerpts, the sheet music for which are available as pdf downloads below.
How to record your audition:
Record your audition on your phone. Most smart phones have the capability to record adequate video and audio quality; therefore you don’t have to spend money on professional equipment or service providers as long as you adhere to these principles:
1. RECORD THE VIDEO IN A SUITABLE SPACE. The location should be well lit (for video quality) and should be one in which your instrument sounds good (for audio quality). Pick a room with limited background noise (air-conditioning or traffic).
2. PLACE THE RECORDING DEVICE AT AN APPROPRIATE DISTANCE. Fix the recording device to an object like a table or music stand using Prestik or adhesive tape. Ensure that it is close enough that the details on the video are clearly visible, but not too close that the sound is distorted. Also remember that if you place the device too far, the sound might lack clarity.
3. RECORD AT THE HIGHEST POSSIBLE QUALITY. If your mobile device offers video recording at different qualities, use the highest quality available. There are also free third party applications available for both iOS and Android that offers higher quality than the built-in applications.
4. IDENTIFY YOURSELF. Please say your name and the orchestra you are auditioning for at the beginning of your recording.
